Virginia wanted to be a nurse to support herself and her new son. She trained as a nurse-anesthetist in New Orleans, Louisiana. Billy Blythe stayed in Hope with his grandparents, Eldridge and Edith Grisham Cassidy, the current Birthplace Home of the President located at 117 S. Hervey St..

Virginia returned to Hope in 1949 and began work at a local hospital. She and her son, Bill, continued to live with the Cassidys until 1950 when she married Roger Clinton, Bill’s stepfather, on June 19, 1950. They moved to their new home also in Hope, Arkansas located at 321 E. 13th Street. This home was acquired by the Clinton Birthplace Foundation in January 2005. They lived here for three (3) more years before relocating to Hot Springs, Arkansas in 1953.
